  1. I'd recommend standard 'torch' looking lights rather than large 'spotlight' lights. With the increasing technology, there is not a massive difference in light output or performance, and when running on rechargeable 18650 batteries they'll last all night (and extra batteries are cheap, so carry spares anyway). They're much lighter lights (haha - I mean they're less heavy) and much more compact. Also, it's quite possible to be running some really cheap lights and mounts, and still get excellent performance. A 1200 lumen spotlight torch, 4 rechargeable 18650 batteries (two to use, two spare), battery charger, and mounts could all be had for around $70 - $80 posted. Throw in another medium-output torch or two for hand-held use and another two batteries, and $100 will have you completely set up. Check out Deal Extreme (www.dx.com). I'm using a setup from Deal Extreme and I'm very happy with the performance for the price I paid. Having said that, I'm not running it on a large calibre cannon - it's on my .223 rabbit/fox gun, and occasionally underneath the 12 gauge. I'm quite confident that it'll be able to handle some medium calibres anyway, so as long as you're not using a .458 Lott to spotlight bunnies, you should be fine.

How about a set of pruning shears / secateurs instead? A lot quieter and easier to carry. And a lot less likely to hack yourself up with. Edit: haha, gsp beat me to it!
  3. What a stupid ######ing rule that is!
  4. It would have to be affixed to the safe. If you had a 10kg safe filled with 140kg of metal plates, or even 140kg of guns & ammo (hell yeah!), the whole thing is 150kg but the safe is still only 10kg, hence non-compliant.
  5. My post was in no way intended to be comprehensive. Yes, there are different requirements for different categories, however most people would only have A+B. Cat C, D, and handguns are different kettles of fish. Also, you would obviously need to let the registry know where they are if they're going to be there for a long time. Duncs - The legalities of sharing with someone who then loses their licence, gets a restraining order taken out, etc is different again. I enquired because I thought it may be possible to store my rifle in the same safe as someone else's rifle if I go on a hunting trip. Also, I can store it at a friends house for a night or two if we're going hunting on his parents farm, etc. There are some households where several people own firearms - farming families is one that springs to mind. It would be possible for everyone in the place to store all their firearms in the one safe (and for completeness - as long as everyone is licenced, firearms are registered, correct categories, there's no more than 15, ammo is stored separately...etc).
  6. (Not sure if this is the correct sub-forum, but I couldn’t find any ‘storage’ specific area…) I’ve heard a few rumours going around about firearm storage with other people – it can’t happen, I even heard you can’t let your missus or anyone else know where the key is… I had read thru the Firearms Act 1996 and some of the subsequent amendments regarding storage of firearms, in regards to sharing a safe with others. There is nothing which says this can’t happen. Just to be sure, I had called Licensing Services Division for confirmation, and they said it’s no worries. In summary – it is legal to store your firearms in the same safe as other peoples’ firearms.
  7. Hi, I've grown up on a farm near Warrnambool in VIC, been hunting for a long time. I just hunt on the farm with a .22 and 12ga, and I'm in the process of getting a .223 for longer range targets. Cheers
