  1. Hi Alf, Thanks for the detailed response. I'm very new to walkies and wasn't aware of 90% of the stuff you stated. I did check both brands in the same stateforest but not in the exact same spot and conditions - it was quite humid (not sure if that affects anything) on the day I had the GME's out. I am going for another hunt in a couple of weeks and have decided to take both brands out and test them. I checked the manual that the GME's come with and the settings are as per their recommendation. I do have both handsets with me at the moment and would appreciate if you can let me know what test I can do? If faulty, I'll take it back to the guy I bought it from and have them replaced. Thanks again for your response.
  2. Just a follow regarding the TX6150: We used it over two weekend hunts in thick bush and were not very impressed with the range. The units cut out after about 300 meters. Last weekend we used a mates Oricom (not sure about the model) 5 watt which seemed to work better. We were able to communicate with eachother well over 1000 mtrs.
  3. Thanks for all the advise, guys. I ended up buying the gme tx6150. Waiting for it to be delivered this week sometime. The rino 650 was more than what i could afford at the moment Sent from my SM-G925I using Tapatalk
  4. Thanks again for the info. We have narrowed it down to the gmetx6150 and the Oricom UHF5500-2. There are heaps of reviews on the net for the gme units, but hard to find anything on the Oricom ones. Anyone here have had experience using one of these units? Almost half the price of gme. 5. Thanks for all the info guys..seems like 5 watts is the way to go. Besides the wattage, is there anything else i should be looking out for? Like number fof channels, antenna size, etc.. Sent from my SM-G925I using Tapatalk
  6. Hi guys, My mate and I are in the market to buy a set of walkies to communicate with eachother when we are out hunting in the bush. We usually hunt stateforests - so terrain is quite hilly and bush quite thick. Would anyone have any advice or suggestions regarding which brand of walkie works best in this sort of a setting? I have heard it is hard to get any range out of hand held walkies in the bush due to limited line of sight. Thanks in advance. Don. Sent from my SM-G925I using Tapatalk
  7. Have faced the same problem on quite a few occasions.
  8. I just got into the sport myself and first bought a Garmin etrex H. It's the most basic model that Garmin has available. It allows you to store around 500 way points, if I'm not mistaken and also has the feature of finding your way back to the car/camp. You can't upload any maps on it though. I found it to be quite good in thick cover as well but wanted something a little better, so I recently bought a Garmin 60csx off ebay for arnd $300. This model allows you to upload topo maps. I have read reviews in many Gps forums and also from many blokes here, after which I decided to go in for it. Haven't had the opportunity to try it out yet. It also comes with a SD card and a colour screen. Hope I was of some help!!
  9. Thanks timber_man... Finally managed to get it.. Great help!!
  10. Hey, I just bought myself a Garmin 60csx and downloaded shonky maps from the internet. The gps unit comes with a world base map and some US maps. MY question is how do I upload shonky maps to my gps? I tried doing it the way mentioned in the readme file but nothing seems to happen.. Has anyone else faced the same problem? Please help!!! Thanks guys!!
  11. Thank you guys for the info. If I do go in for a mapping gps, how much do you think I could get a cheap but reliable unit for? Also I have heard about some maps being free online like Shinkymaps. Are these useful or do I need to purchase topo maps(which would again burn another hole in my pocket, I'm guessing). cheers
  12. I thought I had.. Just need to know if I'm making the right decision... Do you think the etrex serves the purpose?
  13. Hi guys, Just needed some advice on GPS's. I am planning to go in for a garmin etrex H. After reading peoples reviews I am now seconding thinking my choice. A lot of people have recommended mapping gps's which in my personal opinion is a waste of a lot of money. I rather wander off into the woods and discover it for myself rather than using a mapped gps system to show me areas. Do you think I'm nuts? The reason I require a gps is so that I can find my way back to the car. Do you think the Garmin etrex serves this purpose? The other option I was thinking about is going in for a etrex which costs around $120 or so and then getting topographic maps of the locations and a compass. Do you think these three should suffice. Any suggestions are welcome. thanks...
