  1. Cotton gets wet and once wet it loses any insulation qualities (if any) and believe me being in the Alpine winter in wet clothes is not a place to be. Another thing to remember is for hunting (sambar) cotton is very noisy going through bush. Wool retains its insulative qualities even when wet. I will suggest that quality fleece is about best overall for the Vic winter bush hunting.

  3. A lot of the modern materials shine and reflect light,if not into camo dull fleece greens are excellent also. I see the ref to yakka workwear, being cotton it is entirely unsuitable for winter alpine hunting in Vic. Cotton is a big no no.
  4. I dont wear my Stoney Creek gear anymore. I noticed my jacket sleeve one arvo in the sun that was reflecting light and had a shine like a silver dollar in Jack Johnson arsehole. Last time I ever wore it!
  5. I look at a lot of deer pre legal and after legal shoot times,I `m not on my own and do so like lots of other hunters and use the best glass. Its very handy to know whats in the 'hood' even if you are not going to be shooting. Those deer that appear before the hunter in last light have to have come from somewhere to get there and if they are doing that then the hunter anticipates and moves further up their path next time for an ambush. There are no bad things to say about the top glass, none whatsoever...most quote a price and I can add that we can divide the end price with 30 years or more of loving and it works out to be sfa compared to the cheaper jobs that will fall by the wayside. $100 bucks a year to have the best? Pffftt! Even 1/2 an hour before last light if the sun is above the glassing background the top glass will still be able to peer into the bush, the cheaper stuff often 'flares' into uselessness.
  6. There's very little difference between good and average glass in the middle of a clear day. Don`t agree with that at all. Top quality brings clarity and definition at any time of day let alone in the early am`s and late pm`s.
  7. Mines a rooster i would wear a bantam out quick lol. Built to a price imo. Still way better than no knife. https://www.knifeshopaustralia.com.au/buck-285bk-bantam-blw-folding-knife-authorised-aus
  8. Yes it certainly has worked and comes with me daily in my daypack. I can recommend this particular knife and vintage but don`t know about the latest models but as they are an old house and have a great name they don`t seem to be adopting cost cutting in the face of the cheap Asian imports. Its a real ad for buy once cry once too.
  9. Had this Buck 110 since `84 iirc and it has seen a lot of work, 99% mainly on deer. Its been a great capeing knife but as seen in the pic its a toothpick now and worn down to buggery. I would love a new blade fitted. I wrote to Buck USA a few years ago but they didn't reply if they did refits etc, prob prefer to sell me a new one. By chance anyone know of a cutler than can fit a new blade for me? I would like to do that as there is a lot of history on walls around the country associated with the knife. I have to say its better value as proven by its age and use than a lot of the gimmicky Conan knives for sale these days.
  10. Yes,anytime I have dealt with Swaro they will request a serial number, even for objective lens caps replacements.
  11. I look at the discomfort of carrying one twice the weight of the latest lightest one the mate carries knowing that I will sleep more comfortably with my heavier one when in camp.
  12. Slept on one in the head of the 'dan river 25 years ago...for ten nights....never again. I call them Chihuahua mats. Perhaps a couple of nights might be ok instead of over a bed of bracken fronds. Edited to add. The more comfortable you are the better you sleep, the better you sleep the better you hunt, the better you hunt means you sleep better anyway.
  13. Thats a good comparo...I have a three or four Conquests and love em. I would have thought the VX3`s be better than that.
  14. A mate got the same as yours camoman in the 10X on the strength of my 8x30 recommendations. He used and used them for great results too. Great value for the price and a really good lower level bino and will do just about every job in front of them BUT thats where the extra big bucks come into play for the extended watch time. We sat one night and one dark I had my new at the time 10 x 42 Swaros.... "theres three deer there mate" Where? " in that ti-tree alcove" I cant see the cants! I unclipped my Swaros and handed them to him "ah #### yeah" I remember years ago when all I had was a 7x50 pair of Gerber`s (knives) obviously re branded binos but they were all I had at the time and were 100% better than my eye. Steiner make an expensive model that are every bit as good as the Swaros and every bit as priced too.
  15. But those heavy crosshairs! if you can try them at a shop before you buy. Thats probably the last place to try them imo, even cheapo`s look good in good light.
  16. I have a Primos Dogg Catcher, its sends my young dog off his nuts ha ha. I have had it two months and am yet to take it into the field. Laziness!
  17. A mate from the US came out and gave me a pair of these 12-13 years ago and I have to say that compared to the Swaros they are tiny, lightweight and for the money absolutely brilliant. I still have them and they sit on the table for instant use here. No one else does eyecups like Steiner as well, simply the best on the market. Focusing is awesome and they are always ready as. I used my own every day for years until the Swaros arrived. I kid you not they are recommended. Always Focused lets you focus each eyepiece to your vision once, then keeps images razor-sharp from 20 yards to infinity - no more chasing focus on moving objects. https://www.steiner-optics.com/binoculars/predator-af-8x30
  18. My own opinion of flip up scope covers for stalking is the same opinion of wearing binos in a pouch on the harness. It is impossible to compare viewing reaction times with unpouched binos. I closely watched my mate a couple of weeks ago in the bush. He was using pouched binos and watching him retrieving them from out of the pouch and the time taken meant really valuable seconds lost, seconds that can mean life or death of a deer and a head on the wall in a quick ID. Yeah, they are good in rain lol granted but that`s about it! For the bush stalking hunter I will never enclose my binos in a pouch...AND the logo on the front is a dead giveawy to a close deer, just like cap logos. Sambar deer will respond to logos on caps, clothing and bino pouches.
  19. I had a pair of rabbits effing about for 800 pics right on the preach pad.
  20. Ah! I remember the old glory days when no one needed a EFFN gps to find their way home.
