Looks very similar to the green river, just with a broader blade.

Possibly, I hang and skin. Makes it easier to haul out without messing up the meat and also easier to hang if the skin is still on and protects the meat too, I reckon. Ye olde buck 119 is a good balance, you can skin easily with it once you are through the hide and removing legs, straps etc isn't hard. The old green river are good too.

I've done a few Fallow and Red since this. Still only the one Sambar though. Between my Buck and the boning knife I seem to be doing OK with them. Both hold an edge well and Fallow aren't much trouble skinning with my Buck. I actually picked up a box cutter for skinning Sambar, seems a few other hunters had resorted to that and it looks like a good idea from what I could see. Still can't believe how thick the hide on those buggers is.
  4. Anything 5w. I got an education last year when we lost Grant for a mo, we could hear him and he couldn't hear us on his 2w. I got a Uniden after that. This one, I think it is; http://www.uniden.com.au/AUSTRALIA/p_uh074sx_index.asp
  5. Lucky he wasn't eyeing off your boots, Duncs. Make him walk in front next time.
  6. 36.6? My old Swanni is still in great shape, just a bit much for most of my Aussie hunting. I had a look at some new ones on the weekend and they appear to have got thinner. Busting to get out and give the new jacket a whirl, especially after Te Anau. You see all sorts of things lying around.
  7. Electric blankets...................... shakes head. Just chuck your Swanni on. Joe, sometimes it pays to sook a little. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
  8. Sheer bloody luxury, we used to dream of IOU. Yeah, we did do OK, Duncs. I also got a bullet puller (sounds a tad sus), bottle of single malt and cash towards a reloading kit which I'm out to go buy this weekend. The lad scored a BSA .270 and an All Blacks jumper. I took my Welsh mate into the gun shop to look at the AR15's while I was there too.
  9. Looks like this little problem sorted itself out, I got a NZH&F Cyclone II jacket for my birthday. http://www.huntingandfishing.co.nz/hunting-fishing-new-zealand-cyclone-technical-jacket-ii-camo.html Got to get this bad boy into the bush and see how well it works.
  10. Jeez, that's cheap. Dropped in to Mialls to pick up a rifle and had a look at the HE stuff. No XTR's there to look at. The only dramas buying online is that you don't know how it will go over all the extra crap you have to wear.
  11. I'm betting I'm tighter than you, Joe. But, my old swanni is 25 years old and still in good nick. I expect it will be fine when I kick it, the Tahr probably would go the same way. So one outlay and done.
  12. The mountain safety council used to drum in, no red swanni's, the same reason. I avoid red, grey, brown or black in outer layers. The roar looks pretty good, here you go Optic. https://www.ridgelineclothing.com.au/products/RLCPJR
