  1. I'm always the odd one out in bino discussions, I run 6x32's and I grab them everytime I head out because they are so nice to carry. Yes, if I hunted big open country I might wish for more? Also, try and find a bad review on a pair of 6x32's because generally they get good reviews. Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk
  2. A fan of fixed knifes these days, you won't need anything very big for foxes and rabbits say a 3-4 inch blade would be heaps? Disclaimer I do carry a Havalon folding scalpel knife in the pack as back up, those things are awesome look into them (they take a replaceable scalpel blade and are scary sharp, I have damn near broken down a Sambar with one). For sharpening the Lansky system is pretty good but a good stone used well will do just as well.
  3. I've experimented with e few things and have a couple of knives that I'm still yet to find the sweet spot. As an ex chippy getting a good edge on a chisel or a plane is shit easy in comparison to a curvy blade of a knife. I have one knife that comes up a treat on the Lansky but a couple that don't, ultimately a good stone I feel will get a better edge. Technique rules in that regard, but I've been thinking about getting a leather strop just to finish things off. Cheers, Waldo
  4. Johny Appleseed is another option?
  5. The Garmin Astro has been by far the most popular but unfortunately it has a frequency not licensed for use within Aus/NZ. If I had personal experience with one I would say they worked OK There is a new Garmin unit though, the Alpha which can be used in Aus, no reason to see why it wouldn't be just as good if not better. Cheers, Waldo
  6. I carry one in my pack and generally end up doing most of my deer field butchering with one. A word of caution put no pressure on the blade as they (the blade) snap very easily! In conjunction with a fixed blade it makes a good combination, as above they are very sharp and do a very good job.
  7. Yeh, it feels good in the hand Optic. The young fella was apparently with my wife when she got it so he had his two cents worth of opinion in there too. Time will tell how it performs after the almighty KABOOM!
  8. I'm hopeful of this becoming my new favorite, xmas pres from spousal unit.
  9. I use Leopold Katmai 6x32's ample mag in typical sambar country and compact enough that I always use them. If long cross gully glassing is an option got the x8 or x10 but buy the ones that suit most of the time?
  10. Cleaning rust of metal can be done with molasses, mix up with some warm water and soak for a week or 4. Youtube it, there are a few vids about it. Cheers, Waldo
  11. I'll watch with interest as I'm kinda looking for the perfect knife. Neither of mine seem to hold an edge good enough for what I want and my little Havalon Piranta seems to end up doing the major work. C'mon guy's, lets see em...................... Cheers, Waldo

    New Knife

    Looks good, nice work
  14. After using mine a few times I do mostly use the x20 power, at long distance winding up gets things a bit bigger but you don't actually see it any better (hope that makes sense). A 100mm objective would be a very big scope! My 20-60x80 is a fairly sizeable unit, definately a park the ute walk a small distance set up a glass as opposed to whack it in your pack type thing and hike in. My line of thinking was on x20 with a 80mm lens I should get plenty of light in under less than favourable conditions. Look thru as many as you can, it can only help. Cheers, Waldo
  15. Hey WL, I brought a Acuter 20-60x80 back around xmas time. It was not too badly priced (can't remember just how much) but seems OK, got a tripod from JB HiFi to go with it and all good to go. Only had it out a couple of times so far, haven't spotted a deer thru it yet but was watching a fox at a fair old distance the other day. You're welcome to have a peek thru it one day. Optics and bird watching forums are a good source of info, those folk know their stuff. Cheers, Waldo
