  1. Should there be such a phrase as "too many knives"? I don't think so but my wife does. So there is no point in explaining the purpose of each and the reason that one must have a varied collection to her. Here is a pic. of the ones that I could easily round up. Laid horizontally are what I would call decorative or just nice to have. The others have all been used and have a purpose. My topic title invites comments. Grant
  2. Got my P7 from China/Ebay last week. AUD77.50 I think, including post. It's the real deal. Includes Lenser batteries too. Grant
  3. Welcome aboard TransmissionDump. Don't be backward in asking questions, there are some very interesting people here with vast knowledge on many subjects. Grant
  4. Worm, this is straight off the brochure from Uniden. Channel 5 and 35 are emergency channels Channel 11 is a calling channel Channels 22 and 23 are for telemetry and telecommand applications Channel 40 is the road channel Channels 1 to 8 and 31 to 38 are repeater channels Hope it helps. These are guidelines. Grant
  5. Take a look at the Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops sites. They have plenty to choose from. I wear Wolverines but everyone has different opinions. Also check back through the threads for all the comments on footwear. Grant
  6. Instructions and pics on making a trail cam are in the new Victorian Deer Hunter Magazine, a big article. Buy a copy and read all the ads too!! Grant
  7. The tiger is a perfect example of highly developed camouflage, actually more orange than yellow. On one hand, when hiding from or stalking an animal which can see colour it blends perfectly with grass and coloured leaf surroundings. Just take a look at some of the YouTube clips on tigers. On the other hand when stalking Sambar deer in India, the tigers' main prey, the stripes serve to break up it's outline while the deer sees the orange as a shade of grey, as do all other ungulates. As stated before, the breaking up of an outline is main objective of camouflage. Check this out to see the full explanation. http://www.hunter.ru/hunting/how_game_anim...animals_see.htm Grant
  8. Got mine last week too from Bass Pro. Similar model Wolverine Scent Mask Mobu but US134.99 delivered. Very comfortable. Been wearing them around but don't think it would really be necessary. Supposed to be waterproof, I'll check that later. My last boots have just started to come apart a bit. Outdoor Rock, made in Italy, were the best boots I ever had. I would have bought them again but can't find them anywhere. Bass Pro is very fast with their processing and delivery. Grant
  9. Kola, check this out for the absolute basics. http://www.wisegeek.com/do-animals-see-in-color.htm It gets more complicated than this but it's a start Grant
  10. It's actually the heat from your eyes which is causing the fogging. Same thing happens to me if I am wearing my glasses after a bit of exertion. Try a wipe over with juice from a cut potato (everybody stop laughing) before you leave camp on the hunt. Use a tissue for that. Or even wipe the lens with soapy tissue, allow to dry then wipe again with a dry one. Grant
  11. Must say, you've done a fine job there AltonaHunter. Now take a look at some pictures from various postings of say, deer in the bush or blokes holding deer and spy the amount of white on the barks of trees, leaves, dirt, rocks etc. We don't seem to notice it or use it as a camo colour. While my rifle with the white blotches looks like a crappy paint job (which it is) lying on the floor, when you put it in the trees it disappears. Also Jindydivers paint job, looks like the leg of a zebra but put it down in a bush and he might have trouble finding it again. And don't forget that most animals see in greyscale. My next job is to give my pack that "explosion in a paint factory" look. Now don't take me the wrong way, with the job you've done on your firearm I wouldn't be surprised if you got inquiries!! Grant
  12. I'd put them under an Ultra Violet light first, otherwise you'll never know if it worked.
  13. Check this out. http://www.atsko.com/articles/clothing-car...conspiracy.html My understanding of the sportswash is that it doesn't add phosphorescent brighteners, just washes your clothes. Also, I don't think it can remove brighteners once they are in the fabric as part of the dye. There is a UV Killer though, I think that might do the trick but I haven't needed to try it I use Lectric washing powder or if I run out then plain soap flakes. If you want to check your gear stick it under a black light. You will soon see the UV relected light. Some fabrics are dyed with non brightener dyes
  14. With all that's going on this seems a bit petty but I thought I'd just finish it off. My original post was offering advice not asking for it. My point is, Don't be scared to whack some outlandish patterns on your gear, which includes rifle and pack. Use white as well. I like the look of Jindydivers firearms. Some real flare there!! You have to see your gear in the bush to appreciate the changes you've made. I wouldn't do this to my Anshutz Here's the beast..
  15. I'll get the hang of this picture thing soon!
  16. Very true Drew but I'm talking about gear only, not clothing, and of course wear a veil. But you can camo your gear very cheaply and don't need to be fussy like painting those dainty little ferns on the stock of your rifle. As long as you break up the outline and don't worry about the colour too much, just plenty of contrast. Just don't paint anything blue. Here is the rifle behind a bush just a bit of red paint then with the white added. It almost diasappears.
  17. Here are the first two pics for comparison The rifle is easily visible as something not resembling a branch or stick.
  18. Powelly, You are quite right deer can see Ultra Violet reflected light and blue is right next to that in the spectrum and it is pretty sure that they can see some blue as well. What I meant by my comment was that I could give the black and white image a little blue to give a closer view of how the deer see it. That is, if there is any blue light reflected off anything, this is how it would look. Grant
  19. I was in the bush getting some promo pictures done a couple of weeks ago, and when we got to the processing stage something stuck out like the proverbial. Although all of the camo clothing works very well, The other gear you carry, a lot of the time could be like a beacon to animals, especially deer which see very well. I use a colour photo first then change it to greyscale to see what works and what doesn't to the eyes of a deer. This is a very basic method of comparing a human view and a deer view. We could add a bit of blue to get closer but lets not get too precious. So the question is.. do you take as much care with your gear as you do with camo clothing? If there are any responses to this, I'll post the pics and show what I had to do to my rifle to make it look like the bush. You might be surprised! Grant
  20. Yes Nitro's right about the UV light. But also add in that deer can see shades of blue as well so don't go walking around the scrub with the Yakkas or the jeans on.
  21. G'day everyone, these days I only hunt the mighty Sambar. So far this Winter have spent 10 weekends at the pursuit for many sightings and one good stag. Look forward to hearing from others.
