  1. I use 10 x 50. And the reason i use that size is because of my eye sight. As mentioned. The secret is to find what suits you and what you want from them.
  2. Done a bit of work, that one. But it looks like its been well made.
  3. I got Blaise to pull out the planks of jarrah and put them in the Quad shed. She tells me there are more than 20 x over 2 mtrs long so there is plenty of it Geoff. Ill saw some up and send you a bag of them. What length do you want them cut at?
  4. Yes that is a guy that understands and has belief in his work. Well done to him.
  5. It was destined for the heater in the shed Geoff. Until i took a bit and cleaned it up Ill try and put a pic up of it. Even the hard wood floor boards look good cleaned up. I have no idea how old this timber is but the Jarrah is stamped on the back with the words Bunnings WA. It did explode when i lifted the boards. And that name is well before the lot that are around today. Also a sample of what Ipch brought back from the Desert. The pic does not do it justice. Its just a small branch off the larger piece, Of which. i have 2 off. The larger logs appear to be a dark red in color. And hard stuff.
  6. ops. AH led me astray. Not that it takes much at times. Thats an interesting knife and sheaf Niroc. Any chance of seeing more of both. Like how the blade is kept in place plus the back and side of the sheaf.
  7. I have contacted that seller AH. I was asking him if he can get it in .150 tho thickness. I want to make a set of chef knifes for the new kitchen. 4 mm is to thick. And i would need a hammer mill to thin it down from 4 mm. If you tried to do it with a hammer it would ruin the finish of the blend. Ill turn up some SS end caps for the handle, one on each end. And one of which will have an internal thread in the cup. So that it all locks up. Im thinking of laminated Jarrah as the handles. Any thoughts on what i intend to do with the billets if i can get it in that thickness. Will it work?
  8. I thought so. Any one want a bit. Is that handle held on by the single pin shown? Nice looking knife. im guessing the blade has been treated?
  9. Yes that is a nice looking bit of work. I have an engraver here with all sorts of points for it. That is something i intend to try out. Having seen her work, it sure puts pressure on to get something to look any where as good as that. She has the shading just spot on.
  10. This is an old favorite. A before and after shot. And age has seen thee wood shrink so it will need a spacer. I could clean the light pit makes out but i think ill leave them as they are.
  11. Strange that you say that. i was thinking about doing the same thing. She has gone Troppo. I love getting her going over schools and a second Language.
  12. I was wondering if it was for her. Do you think it will keep her off facebook for more than 10 minutes?
  13. I like that AH. It has a usable field shape. I also like Geoffs two. Both have realistic blades.
  14. I was in the same boat Waldo. I had a gut hook thing that was used for skinning mostly. And that is about all it was good for. The havlon did everything from skinning to butchering. But i must admit the knifes i put together seem to be the nuts guts. Feels good and solid in the hand, holds an edge and they can handle hitting the bone without loosing the edge. A rough sharpen and they will remove hair. The other thing i like about the knife is the thickness of the blade and the length of the blade. I havnt done any skinning with it yet. But i think Joe has with his. It should be an interesting thread to read, as we all do things differently. And in many cases different game needs a different shaped blade.
  15. I wont be selling it Travis. It might have kept up with inflation as far as value goes. But thats about all. Can you tell me what the eye with the rays coming off it means? Mine has the eye stamped in it . I have seen other marks on the blades. But i cant find anything to tell me what the different stamps mean. It did cost me big money as best i can recall. But i also payed it off over a few months. Its about the only thing that has survived from my teens.
  16. I think it cost me about $40.00 when i was a teen. That would have been 45 years ago. I was earning $14.00 a week as an Apprentice and paid fortnightly, and $3.00 an hour as a brickies laborer on the week ends. Its gained a bit of value that i had not expected. Not to sure i want to use it on the pigs now.
  17. I was researching a knife i have had since a teen. And i came across this site. The knife i have sent me broke as a teen, but if the price is right as shown here im more than happy now. And my knife is as good as this one the sheaf is old and gone hard, as well as cuts in it. http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-519668788-cuchillo-antiguo-african-hunter-carl-schlieper-solingen-_JM I have just had a good look at the one for sale, It has pit marks and it does not have the eye with rays stamped on it which makes mine even more valuable. But that sheaf is in better condition.
  18. Well done Geoff. That looks real nice. An interesting sheaf mate.
  19. To be honest Paul. I would clean that knife up and keep it. That blade could have been made by a knife making master. Hand forged from steels that may have been exotic at the time and not available now. You may well have a $1000.00 + knife there. Its age will give you some idea of the quality of work that would have gone into making it. Damascus is all the rage now. And every Tom and Harry are making them out of anything. That wont be the case with that knife. Keep it mate.
  20. Condies crystals. Is that how its spelt geoff?
  21. I can see what you you were talking about Paul. It seems to have survived pretty well. I would use Phosphoric Acid on the blade. it wont damage the metal. it will eat the rust away. One of the boys might have a better idea. Pit marks from the rust and the depth of them will come back to new metal using that Acid. They might polish out easy. Who knows. The sheaf looks straight forward and practical.

    Niroc Knives

By accident i did the same thing same vid 2 night ago AH. Nice work. We now have some great knife makers in the forum. The etching Seems simple enough. But is it? I seen Gafs ( Geoff) last blade he made and he had his name on it. I great finishing touch.
  23. If your not trying to sell anything. I dont see a problem. But it isnt expensive to become a sponsor. In any case Thanks for the pat on the back. I have been in the steel game all my life and i expect absolute excellence when i make something. Those bloody knifes broke my track record. But i have learn t from it. Now ill do a bit of knife making machinery type inventions. With luck ill have a lathe and oxy by the week end. And then ill knock up a decent welding bench so that i can re invent the band saw. Im also making an attachment for the Linisher. A standard 8 inch grinder with a 915 belt will go to something like 1500 belt running off a set of rollers of different dia that just slip into the existing parts. Then i might be settled enough to have another go at them. Down the track ill get onto you for a real good bit of steel and ill make one from scratch. Gafloss and AH have helped me through the first batch.
  24. Another knife maker lurking huh Come on mate spit it out. Fill us all in on yourself and your wares. And samples of your work of course. Welcome. They rekon im a Grumpy old Bugger. But im an Just so long as they keep thinking that i have them bluffed.
