Hi austral,

Hand-held UHF radios are something I carry whenever I hunt. If hunting with friends, we each carry one. The ones I have are tiny, with a 3km range (line of sight - significantly less of hills are involved).

Even when using the radios, we ensure we know the general location of all parties in the hunt. It's no good calling your mate and warning hiim you about to fire, if he has no idea where you are, or you where he is.

To be honest, the only time I have used the radios is when a mate became 'geographically confused' and had to talk me onto his location!

IMO, a good investment though.

Cheers,

700.

I hunt with my son and we use 1W units, we are never too far apart (next gully or so over) and they work a treat. Use them when someone has fired a shot as an update to call the other over to help with the cleaning and carry out. Ours are Oricom units we got for $69.00 from Wow about 12 months ago, haven't seen them that cheap since. You can spend a lot more and get a lot more but these do what we need.

Cheers,

Waldo

Hi Austral, having UHF on your person is of extreme value for safety and you can never have to much of that. It is indeed helpful if you also get misplaced or need somone else to bring the ute up to where you are shooting.

5w is not overkill, I am looking for some decent ones myself since I not long fitted the ute out with a decent UHF as well. Uniden seem to be the flavour but you pay for em.

Let me know how you go.

Cheers

K.

Spent a lot of time researching UHF handhelds and settled on the Vertex Standard VX-426

These are made by Yaesu

I had a look at ICOM, Garmin, GME, Motorola, Uniden even Digitalk

You get what you pay for

Check it out - couldn't get it cheaper anywhere else and they have free express delivery Australia wide and you can claim the GST component back if your traveling overseas

hey mate

would highly recomend you get a set i got a pair mid last year the undien 2 watt ones and they are good if you hear a shot are need to ask some thing you can also very handy for safty reasons i carry one evan if i am deer hunting by my self.

if you have the money to spend on 5watt ones get them they are a bit more than the 1 or 2 watt ones. i have hunted with guys with the 1 watt ones and not being able to hear a coulpe of people but our group has also all used 5watt ones and some people can go out of range in the next gully. i use them in hilly scrubby country when hunting deer it also depends on the terrain. but also like what len said you get what you pay for. good luck tho.

Also keep in mind that it's illegal to hunt deer with the aid of electronic devices.

That said, there's a bunch of radio's out there that are really good.

I have a Vertex Standard VHF Airband radio and recieving it lasts for a couple of days on one charge, transmitting it still lasts for the day. Very small unit and it's "water proof" (ie, the same as my GPS, enough to pick it up out of the creek and shake it dry).

Check if there's an Aussie version of the Garmin Rino. It's a GPS and Radio unit. Does all the nav work and it transmits your location which other units can receive and plot. Now you can sneak up behind your mate and scare the sh!t out of him.

Also, I'd ask a specialist store about handheld antenna's, specificly high gain one's that reduce your overall range, but work better in the gullies.

1w 2w 3w & 5w used by a crew doing a cull in Eastern Vic. you can hear everything on a 1w but noone could hear them even at 1 km in hilly stuff.

I used a 1w once before giving it back to the kids- lol. My next one is a 3w and is good to transmit to about 8-10km

If your hunting in open country not thick bush it might be different and work out to 10km. On the boat a 3w would be good to 12km. A few places sell a pack of 2 3w for about 200-300 odd which makes a reasonable compromise. 1 or 2w are not really suitable.

Hunt hard and have fun

Definitly get a set of UHF handhelds for safety reasons.

I use the Uniden .1, .5, & 2watt adjustable handhelds but find they are only useful on the 2watt setting even in flat but bushy terrain. Batteries are chargable and seem to last all day in receive mode.

If you can afford the 3 to 5 watt versions then get them but try to make sure that everyone in your hunting party has similar wattage radios as well otherwise they will hear you but you cant hear them.

With GME versions you can upgrade the antenna to a higher gain version ie. simply screw in a different antenna for better reception and transmission.

Check out their site.

GME tx 600 series handhelds

I also use them for skiing with a group of mates as its easier to press and talk with thick gloves on and cheaper than mobile phones.

Also use them for pulling electrical and data cables between floors, roofs and long distances.
