a local guy has been buying ferric chloride from my work to do some inlay work on metal. I checked out his website and saw a few knives with similar blades to that one.... unreal work mate

how long does it take to finish off?

Okay guys, thought i post some pics of my new Damascus knives.... They are no way in the same class as Gryph's which was truly a piece of art but i like them. 2 (white handles) are drop point skinners and weight a tonne, 1 is a stockmans locking blade(little one) and the other 2 are just general purpose hunting/skinners ... I hope you enjoy the pics... I did have to reduce them a fair bit though so quality has suffered....

Wow.

I'd never seen a damascan blade before this thread. Sort of wished I hadn't now - they are very, very tempting.

How is the effect created? Obviously worked in some manner. Is it folded over and over again?

imagine a red hot (white hot) billet of metal belted flat then folded then flattened then folded...with an air hammer some billets of steel are folded 1500 times.

I spoke to a Damascus cutler that was folding 1200 times by hand!

If anyone is considering buying a cheap damascus knife off ebay have a look at this thread off another forum before buying:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=725923

Also note the link to "Two finger knife co" in there too. Theyre legit and can supply stabilised handle material and pins if your willing to put some work in.

There are some good pieces here, a Green River blank for $10 gets you real quality carbon steel,a few bucks for pins etc and make a handle for yourself from whatever grabs you, maybe a bit of antler, bone or some exotic wood you have around the joint.

and also here for those that want to try making from kits or even buying a finished job.
