I've had one from jaycar electronics for awhile. Costs $80 from memory runs aa batteries with battery pack at back of head. Ive had a few cheapo headlamps which soon failed, this one has had good use for over 2 years without any probs.

It's at WWW.jaycar.com.au

Search for head torch, its the 185 lumen one and its only $40 now!!!

How far you want to see Maxy?

I got a Princeton Tec EOS from eBay a while back, cost about $45 delivered IIRC, from a seller called LED Security Solutions. It's an all in one unit with 3x AAA's running it (included) - light and compact, 55 lumens and hi, low, medium and strobe settings. Is water resistant too. Lights up about 25m or so, more of a floody beam but great for general use.

I bought a LED Lenser H7 off US Ebay around 3 months ago, cost $50 or so delivered, best thing since sliced bread, could spotlight rabbits with it, runs on AAA batteries and they claim can last over 50 hours. It has a dimmer and a focus so you can have a big wide beam or a narrow one. bloody good. Didnt bother with the H7R cos it's the same but with rechargeable batteries but more coin. Figured the cost of AAA batteries these days is negligable and recharge batteries can be dodgy sometimes.

If you want to do lots of close up work, and have another light to see long distances with, the Zebralight H501w is a great light. Link

I've had mine for about a year now, took it on a couple of camping trips, one of which involved a 2am emergency tarp pulldown, because a massive storm hit. We were out for over an hour in the bucketing rain and driving winds, this headlamp worked like a charm. It only weighs 63 grams with a battery installed. Uses a single AA battery, can run for about 2 hours on high, or 21 days on the lowest mode (which is good for midnight toilet runs at the campsite.) The cost is about $60. It has a Neutral white LED, which makes things look more natural, compared to cool white LEDs, which make things look dead.

There have been some reports of zebralights breaking in the past, but I've only had good experiences with them, and their customer service is great.

Hope this helps,

Alex

I use a petzl myo xp it takes 3 aa batteries is very bright and lasts for ages on a set of batteries.

+1 for the petzl myo, mine has survived years now (get the one with the slip across filters as its great at night within the tent and keeping your night vision). The Princeton Tec is also a very good head torch

Use the H7R for work and recharge once a week with 12V USB outlet in lighter socket in vehicle on the way home work. H14 or h14R looks the go for moblie spotlight rig.

I recommend the Black Diamond Icon. It runs either on three AA batteries or a recharging pack. It's a very bright light that you can even spotlight with. It has a high beam with three brightness levels, a broad light with three brightness levels and a flashing light. My husband owns this headlight and he loves it.

I have a Tactical headlight that's also pretty good.

That is what I was going to recommend to You. I have one. It has a reasonable beam, about 30m usable at night, light, no bulky battery pack and has a red led if you want need to be stealthy or protect night vision.

I have one and it's great.

Tikka XP2 headlamps are pretty good. The led lenser would be good for the extra light on some occasions but the extra weight and battery packs are a bit bulky for walking along a track at night, opening gates, or 'reading' in bed.
