What Knife?

I have a knife at the moment but its a $20 special from anaconda. Its not bad, but you get what you pay for.

So I'm after something around the $100 mark, something with a gut hook.

What do you guys/girls recommend? and where is a good place to buy them online? or in Melbourne?

i've dealt with these guys 3 times and found them very good to deal with. And $8.95 shipping from the U.S, doesnt get much better. if you buy a Boker knife you will have it for a lifetime.

you can get really good deals off ebay if you search for them, thats where ive gotten all mine from

most of the major (quality) knife manufacturers knives can be found on ebay

fixed blade knives are still able to be imported without a permit, i've never had a problem getting them (8 so far)

i'd recommend these -

http://www.fallkniven.com/en

http://www.topsknives.com/

http://www.eseeknives.com/index2.htm

http://www.ontarioknife.com/catalog

these companies produce good quality knives at reasonable prices, and most are warranted for life...

hope this helps :)

its a fairly well known fact that german steel is top class, so any knife with german steel will serve you well. the knife in the link is german, so should be a good buy at under $80 delivered.

I generally carry 2 x knifes. 1 is a fixed blade with a gut hook and the other is a Havalon "scalpel" and those things are great! Just don't put too much pressure on the blade or they will snap the blade (replaceable anyway). Hany to have 2 in case you lose one and need the back up, last deer did the heavy stuff the the fixed blade but probably used the havalon more than fixed blade in the end.

Those Moroka X3's look like a pretty good bit of kit though and if I was in the market would probably grab one of those.

Cheers,

Waldo

As far as bang for your buck anything from the Frost/Mora knife range will amaze you. Theie blades have different hardness steels wrapped together. As in the blade is hard covered in a softer steel for the back. Ive owned lots of expensive knives and there all very average compared to the performance of the Moras. And the price ? Cheap as chips. If you've never owned a Mora your really missing out on what will probably become your favorite blade.

This may sound like a stupid question, but what on earth do you use the gut hook for? I've skinned and gutted bucket loads of rabbits, but not much else so I am by no means an expert. I think I may know what it gets used for but wanted someone to tell me for sure.

I just bought a Razor Blades skinner,Red Stag knife . Made in aus off ebay from brisbane_knives.

I got it real cheap because I was the only bidder. It has a burl wood handle and looks and feels really good. I have not used it yet but it is real nice to look at and hold.

Check out Brisbane_knives on ebay.

I have a gut hook on the back of a gerber folding knife. Although sometimes useful it is more often a nuisance. It gets in the way when you are trying to carve through thick mussel, like when you are decapitating the animal. When they go blunt they are hard to sharpen, and you have to be carefull when putting it in your pocket that you don't cut it open.

I ended up getting this knife, its a great knife nice and sharp and seems to hold its edge very well. only issue is that the handle has a slight twist in it and that makes it more suitable for a left hander.
