Scope And Binos Fogging Up

Recommended Posts

i got mine out of the $2 bargain box on the gun shop counter.. lol.

.. and the link here to the material safety sheet tells you what's in it.

http://sport.birchwoodcasey.com/Accessories/AccessoryDetails.aspx?ProductID=17b4a033-2531-4189-9a2c-26e00e62ffa5

6% Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol.. no wonder it remined me of footy training) 4% Propylene Glycol n Butyl Ether (think that might be lighter fluid) 2% Surfactant (detergent) and 88% Water. That's about the same as the home made mixture recommended by Carl Ziess, minus the water.

At 12 bucks a tiny bottle, I'm in the wrong business :D

Discontinued might still be a few in stock with the distributor, I still have a few in the shop, 5 for $2.00 but I better grab a heap for my own stash

gday cam, years ago when the helmet visor fogged up we used a very small drop[very small] of dish wash liquid on the inside then polished it off till it hazed, let it dry a few minutes then all was good...no fog ,no matter how hard you breathed on it and some mornings where dam cold .i'd reckon for a scope or bino lense the drop would be so small you would'nt be able to see it other wise you'll end up with bubbleswhen you breathe and your back to the start.i've no idea what effect this might have on precision lenses, but a small smear on a soft lense cloth shouldnt hurt, just a thought .cheers gsp

Hey Cam,

How are ya mate? What I found with lenses it almost didn't matter what I did I'd still get external fogging. The reason this happens is due to the glass being a different temperature to the ambient air causing the moisture in the air to condense on the lense. The best trick I found is to equalize the temperature of the lense to the outside air well before you head out on a hunt. So as soon as you wake up for a morning hunt take the caps off your binos and scope, it shouldn't take more than 20-30 mins. But don't let them point skyward to the falling dew and once they cool down u should have trouble free glassing, coatings help but temperature seems to be the main cause.

Thats what it thought

Remebered from primary school

Id left the scope caps off the whole time it must have been because the rifle was in a case and held temp.

the binos sat in my day pack or on the back seat in the car.

I think the scope may have needed to warm up to the outside temp.

Ill give the spray a go but i'll do as you said as well just to be sure.

i'll leave em out while i muck around camp and stock the day pack etc.

thanks for the tip.

Been good hows bout you? been a while

Yer really good mate I just been moving round the country and super engrosed in work ATM. Zero time for recreation. Just starting to taper off a bit now. Moved to NSW recently just getting my R Catagory Licence sorted so I can get out around Sydney.

How is your search for a big Sambar stag goin? Have u guys had your gatta hunt this year yet?

Cams gear fogs up due to Adrenalin.

I watched him carry a baby and check out a wallow LMAO.

That spot has been hot but from what i seen but its not now.

I hope im wrong mate.

Ill own up to this my Speed Glass Helmet fogs up inside the inner lens.

But im not about to spend $1500.00 on an air filterer and blower at my age.

I just blame my glasses cause i cant see. :thumbsu:
