gafloss
After a number of recommendations from guys on here, I bought a Garmin GPS Map 62s. I can't fault it in any way. It does all I need and then some. You can lash out & get the Garmin topo maps or download Shonky Maps for free. Mine came with free Garmin maps - keep an eye out as they run this offer from time to time. http://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/gpsmap-62s/ I imagine the DPI SF maps will be available in Garmin format, as they used to be, it will be interesting to see what other units they are compatible with. Duncs
I've got a GPS Map60 so I'm guessing the model before Geoff's and it's great. Got more features than I'll ever use.

samburstalker
Rhino 650. Pin points your mates on the map as well, UHF as well. What ever you get in a gps, make sure it can run the topo maps. I also have the garman 62s like gafloss. The rhino is the same plus more. Both great units, I find the 62s runs two batteries for a day and the rhino uses rechargables which last two days
biggles
whichever one you do purchase look for one that has an mem card slot, will make it much easier to change maps, also a mem card will have an increased capacity to store and change the diff maps while out hunting ( shonky to the new dpi maps for example). Best price I could find on a Rino, although I didnt do a long seach http://www.ryda.com.au/Garmin-Rino-650-Handheld-GPS-p/rino650.htm they also list this for the 62s http://www.ryda.com.au/ProductDetails.asp?Click=21519&ProductCode=GPSMAP62S hope this helps
gafloss
If you know someone else who wants one, Johnny Appleseed has 2x Rhinos for the bargain price of $599 http://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/rino-650-gps-uhf-radio/

matt75
Can't find the map62s on the website. Was that in a catalog sale? Found it in Catalog and they are holding one for me. Better go get it Edited January 22, 2014 by matt75
gixxerdims
I researched about 6-9 months ago which GPS to get and i found the Garmin map 62s to be the best for what you would want to use it for. I got mine new off ebay around 4 months ago for $350 brand new, but like Duncs said, go to Anaconda, they run sales from time to time. Get your maps after for $30 or however much they are. Duncs
Shonky maps are free and definitely worth comparing. Although $30 for the Garmin ones isn't much - they used to be a couple of hundred!
Bundy Boozer
Ordered a Garmin GPSMAP 62S today from ryda.com for $298, spoke with Johnny Appleseed staff to see if they could price match and best they could do was $350. Interestingly the JA staff said that $298 is below cost so there was no way they could match it, obviously made my decision to purchase from ryda a pretty simple one. matt75
I found most persons with a topo map and their GPS have trouble using the two together because the number on GPS and Map are different. Set Datum to WGD 84 Co ordinates to UTM Should help to locate yourself easier.

gafloss
Call me paranoid but I didn't feel comfortable putting all my eggs in one basket with the Rhino. Something happens to it & you've lost GPS & UHF. Even though it's a bit more to carry, I like to carry one of each.
