Back Packs

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

complete new guy here, and wish to use the forums knowledge.
A mate of mine has asked me to come down for a shooting trip to Victoria, it is a backpacking trip in the high plains chasing deer.

I have owned a pack for years and want the forums thoughts on what works for a shooting pack, the last pack I used was for walking only not hunting.

Found this on face book the other day,

is Crossfire and Mystery ranch good brands for hunting, my googling tells me mystery ranch has a good rep in the US for hunting but is expensive, any one with any knowledge of the brand, crossfire seems to have a military following?

over to you.

Mystery Ranch make great packs BUT, unless you use them every day or your life depends on them, they are way too expensive.

A good hiking pack will be your best bet to carry all your crap to base-camp, then head out hunting with a small day-pack.

Plenty of good packs around in the $200 - $300 range.

Ok, too expensive, even at 50% off? i have always been of the opinion that it is best to buy the best you can afford.

I was looking at the Wilderness Equipment Lost world which retails for just $600 in most stores i have seen it in, but if tis mob is really discounting the mystery stuff at 50% that will put it in the same price range as the lost world?

The googling of the mystery stuff gave it a good following in the US hunting market, but I have not heard of it in Australia, the search i done on here only found one reference to the brand, I just wanted to know if anyone heard of it before?

Remember that mob is right near the Enoggera (sp) military barracks. They will be cued up well before the sale opens. The ad also says "up to 50% off".

Really it's up to you how much you spend & how often you're going to use it. Personally I'd go up to maybe $300 & spend the rest on other gear.

If I was prepared to spend more it would be this one:

Black Wolf make nice hiking packs.

I have a Black Wolf Sierra 85 pack with detachable day pack and love it. Comfortable, plenty of room and pockets and it's top and front loading. Built in rain covers, the main straps pack away for use as airplane luggage etc.
It was a couple of hundred (can't remember exact price), but that's pretty cheap and given the wear any tear I've put on the pack as a scout leader I can honestly say it's worth it.

I've even strapped a heavy and long barreled rifle to that pack, as witnessed by the Gatta crew a couple of years back.

Mystery Ranch has a very good name, but unless you are able to claim it back on tax, you might want to think twice about them. They do a good hunting line, but they do a lot of business selling packs to military personal.

Sord is also a good name making military packs. I have a frame from them (cost $150) and love the frame. Will likely get the matching pack, but can't justify the extra $300 or so at the moment.

Before you commit to buying a pack, I'd ask you how you intend to camp/hike with it. How often, what sort of gear you are taking etc.
