Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter
Hi everyone, I've just joined this forum as i keep Ferrets & have hunted most small game here in Aust. Used to shoot rifles & shotguns, but havent done that in a while now. Also have fished all my life since 5. With Saltwater a mainstay in my fishing exploits. I was born & reside in Australia, In Victoria to be a little more exact. About me, i am 40 years old & have kept Ferrets since i was 14. Had them for well over 12 years in various numbers. Its only recently i have got back into owning Ferrets since selling off the last of them in 1998 A few notes on past times & present: It was pretty much a way of life, with very regular weekend trips and often midweek quick sessions locally. I am lucky to have a few area's within a 5/10min drive to exercise both my dogs & ferrets. We always had Jack Russels back then, they weren't a recognised breed at this time. This has since changed of course and there is some fine breeds of working terriers available now, although the 'pet shop' scene has made their typical in thing breed stamp on pricing etc.. We used to breed both Jack Russel & Miniature Fox Terriers as well as Ferrets most seasons. Have some fond memories of terrific days out with a pair of 'switched on Terriers' The favourite pair we had that produced most of the litters, was a Jack Russel bitch & a Mini Fox Terrier. We had some great replys from owners, regarding their stead fast demeanour & tenacity when working them. We even had our next door neighbour purchase one from the original first litter. It was blessed like its Mother & lived a great life until it was 20 years old. Dear old Mum 'Nippy" as she was known was a ripe old 22 & had produced 23 pups over the years. I'll post up some pics in time of some days gone. Prior to 'Nip' going i had aquired a Jack Russel male through default, he was a darling little 6 week old pup owned by a lady who had issues. After having him here a few times to help her out i was offered him. Didn't muck about with this decision as i could see had potential. He was named Ruppy by my brother as it rhymed with pup...silly i know, but it stuck... was a good choice as you could just say 'Rup' & he'd appear He soon become a second shadow to me wherever i roamed. At the time i was working aboard a fishing Charter Boat, Rex Hunts Son in fact as he's been a long time friend & who i still fish with often. Anyway he took to it like water as they say, & soon was nailing fish as a terrier would on a rabbit hitting a net. Eventually i had an offer to put him over a bitch that was of similar build. A deal was made that i would have pick of the litter. This was done & so now, i have a pup from Old 'Ruppy' Ruppy was put to sleep at the age of 16 in Aug 07 When Ruppy was around 13 i got a Whippet through my Mum. She used to breed & show them. She lived in Heathcote Victoria at the time & produced some fine dogs. This Whippet was named Dusty & was a true gentleman. He lived until he was 11 but unfortunatley had cancer invade his testicle area. He was put to sleep in Mar 07 The pup from Ruppy a Jack Russel bitch is a tiny girl that even though she's approaching 10 years, still has a great deal of spark in her yet. She's named Tasha. I have since aquired another Whippet again through my Mum. She's brindle-white with dapples in coloration. She's just on 3 years old now. Named Coco, she's an excellent dog with a very quick off the mark pace. Dusty was a smoky grey with white, hence the 'Dusty' title. I'll get some pics posted up of Dogs, Ferrets etc real soon. Do you think i said enough Cheers, Shaun
