  1. any sandgropers interested in joining the WA branch of the Australian Deer Association (we have a committe, 30 members so far, 1st issue 'secret' newsletter already distributed etc) drop me an email at darren.monks@det.wa.edu.au.

while i like this site i can only rarely access it, so unfortunately can't respond to queries here.

if you google 'ada' you'll find all the info (a national body) and membership details etc.

  2. i love my pig hunting - mainly stalking about with bino's under full moon on stubble (lightforce walkabout kit), or poking around orchards at dawn with my bow.

however, pis are no comparison IMHO to the red and fallow deer i've gotten onto in recent years and hunting mates agree. deer are much more switched on. eyesight and hearing they cream pigs!

Only reason i wear camo when pig hunting is beacuse i've got the camo gear, so might as well wear it, might help a bit. however, for deer hunting i reckon it's imperitive, when you need every little bit of extra assistance you can get, to stalk in for a close shot.

  3. that's a good point Fangster - that not wearing gloves or face cover, but being clad in camo elsewhere, only makes those white bits stand out even more - silhouettes them.

i reckon animals like deer have a sixth sense - i don't even stare at the buggers when watching and waiting. i reckon they get that 'i'm being watched' feeling.

  4. i'm puzzled at some hunters, who go to the effort of wearing camo pants, shirt and hat - but they are all different colour/camo patterns. no bush looks like that - must all be the same.

also, wearing camo shirt, pants and hat, but then having a big white face and hands also seems to be defeating the point. use gloves and a mesh mask (i just tie a bit of scrim around neck and cover face like a robber when convenient).

doesn't matter whether chasing rabbits or deer - if you want to get close you need to cam up.

however, camo doesn't make you invisible. doesn't matter what you're wearing when you're walking for example, movement gives you away regardless of clothing.

  5. yeah - sowed it robbo.

only problem with the hamock thing for me hazedog is that's it's not a sniper suit i need as i use it for bowhunting and wear it on the move through the bush, walking all day and need flexibility when shooting arrows and not too hot etc. i think the hamock idea is really only good if lying prone all day. however, food for thought and thanks for input.

  6. what glue did they use Balty - the correct glue would make making yowie suits a quick and easy job?

yeah - i'm sold on loops and will put some in - some sorta black elastic i'd gather? just imagine being in Pilbara region of WA and putting spinifex in loops and bobbing down - scrub cattle/camels would walk right over the top of ya i'd imagine.

  7. thanks olga13 - food for thought for sure.

    often wondered about glue??

what kinda glue w/could possibly replace sewing/loops???

loops could then be used for a bit of specific native shrubbery when hunting maybe?

what glue is non-stinky and strong for fabric etc?

anything to replace all that stitchwork be great.

  8. hessian's really light Balty and it's wonderful to wear in winter.

in summer the only animal (pigs are nocturnal here in SW West Aust) i'll ever be hunting during the heat of day will be goats and during the hottest part of day i'll be sitting in shade and scoping and not walking about like a mad hatter so no worries.

climbing over barbed wire fences is the worst thing about wearing it.

wearing hoods is hot and putting cam cream on face in summer is a sweaty yucky mess - the scrim scarf bit is good for ventilation.

  9. it might seem extreme for some, but believe me when trying to stalk within 20m of a deer with a recurve bow it makes all the dif being able to survive one 'stare' at least.

i can't afford those expensive ghillie suits (some of which don't survive getting dragged through spikey Aussie scrub and are meant for USA pine forest) so made my own.

if you have the money i'd recommend buying a suit unless you have a lotta time on hands (i don't but didn't really have a lotta choice) or access to someone with a sewing machine etc as it takes a lotta stitching.

i just bought some cheap beige/khaki workwear, painted it in black, green and brown similar to ASAT pattern, sowed in strips of cut up auscam and hessian, thrashed the hessian with a wire brush and rubbed camo cream (same colours as paint, auscam) into hessian.

the suit in pic (not a good pic as raining outside so indoor pic) will look better after a few days in scrub when hessian is weathered some. the best thing about hessian is that is does weather (wear out and look ratty and real natural) but that's also the worst aspect as you have to do what i just finished doing prior to pic - sowing more in (which constantly must keep doing - upgrading as wears away).

i did a similar thing with old green Aussie army bush hat (with a couple emu plumes for good measure (i was bored out bush one day when midday during heat)) and i use a bit of auscam scrim as a scarf around neck that i pull over face when i think game is close.

labour intensive but cheap and works well - just ask a few dead goats.

hope this is of interest for someone?

  10. g'day ValiantUsher and welcome to the state of milk and honey. :D

good as WA is i still don't like your chances of a property owner contacting you mate - more like vice versa.

calici virus has really trimmed down most of the bunny population around Perth so unlikely to find a property owner desperate enough to approach you.

however it's a big state and 1 properly approached landowner could yield you all the foxes and bunnies you want to turn your .22 mag on.

    good luck. ;)
