Back Packs are like women hard to find a good one that suits your purpose.
They also get you hot and sweaty. And can give you the craps.
My big pack is not a hunting pack at all, it has a frame that keeps it off your back a great waist band and adjustable chest strap.
I spent a day at Anaconda trying out packs, And i mean a day. It was a sale day 50% off.
I took each and every one that i thought may be what i wanted filled them up with stuff to give them some weight.
Then wandered around with it on.
The final decision was made by elimination, but it took a day and time well spent IMO.
I have a number of back packs for different things.
But this one im talking about is the most comfy.
It is not a camo hunting pack, it is a hiking pack.
Grant has some good back packs.

One point you have missed i think.
Is that you have to notify the registry of the location of the firearms.
That means if you dont live where the firearms are stored the need to know about it.
And there is a time limit on it.
Im not up with the rules on hand guns, and correct me if im wrong.
I think they have to be under a separate and different storage arrangement?

50Cents? crist thats child labour rates, no wonder mum is a better deal.
Feel assured next time you ask, it may well be expensive after all you have to wear them.
At what price? and what price do you put on your comfort?
Be like ants in ya jocks.
-
Paint it in camo clothes colours
Turn it into a work of art, um something like a gun safe.
Get a 4 poster bed and bolt it down length ways under it.
-
IMO dont do it. Unless you can hide it from view.
Why advertise you have firearms?
It may be yours but im sure you will get knocked back for some reason or another.

Im a bit anal about what goes near my knifes.
And that includes people using them.
There are a heap of things on the market cam.
They all work, but do they damage the blade by removing to much metal.
Also do they let the blade get hot, because if it changes color its rooted.
Thats why i use the set up i have, im sure you have seen it in action?
I dont have to worry about heat or the angle.
Look back through old posts and you will see some of us have close to the same bit of kit.
The same idea what ever the make up is.
Altona Hunter.
made this jig a couple of years back for sharpening kitchen knives and machettes. I have been planning to make a better one with rollers and proper clamps as i have a milling machine now but it does the job for now. I use a lansky sharpener with diamond stones for smaller knives.
I have never met this bloke, but there is little difference in out sharpeners.
The last thing i ever want is a run in with one of my knifes. Thus the steel glove.

Do any of you notice a heat build up inside from the car fridge while traveling?
If so have you come up with a way of transferring it to out side without cutting big holes in the car?
I have decided to go for a 3 way fridge, mainly due to the fact that the option to use gas while in camp makes more sense.
And they work the best off gas so im told?
Spent some time at ARB, who dont make a 3 way, but they do have good looking pack racks and awnings.
Can i get some feed back on other makes that you guys may be using?
Next im also after a good UHF antenna for car, any suggestions on a make and model to suit a GME 5 watt.
And if you can help with a make of driving light that does not cost $500.00 that would also help.
last but not least, has any one fitted an over head console to a 2001 patrol, I would rather fit the radio up out of the way than in the dash.
Or if you can steer me in the right direction so i can look at overhear consoles for the patrol.
Cheers and thanks.

They are bulky a bit.
Mine turns into a back pack.
They are made that way to be carried as a back pack type.

Had it about 5 years.
It is scarey just how fast it can get up a tree, to a great height.
But it is safe. And they give the best view of the land.
They all come with an approved harness which is more trouble than the chair.
Death by these things in the states is high.
They also come with a video.
And a knife built into them to cut yourself free
Strangulated death from the harness.
Mind you its not that cold here, but they can kill.
Look into them before you decide and also work out a plan should you fall out of it.
I have a rope attached to mine.
They are a great thing but you spend more time frigging with the harness than the chair.
I gave the harness away, just to much trouble moving it up the tree then the chair then it and so on.
I have the harness attached to the chair now and not the tree with a rope off the chair.
Have fun.

This is what i use.
NEW! Summit 180° Max™ SD Climbing Treestand
Worth the money IMO.

Had a pair of steiner.
Couldn't wait to get rid of them and i was happy to lose money on the deal.
You need to look through them prior to purchase.
My eyes did not suit the steiner.
I did the Russian thing and other makes.
Spent a bloody fortune on binos. Then gave them away as gifts to farmers.
In the end i found a set of Carsons 10x50.
Suited me to a tee.
And i know a few blokes that have used mine have also gone out and got a set of Carsons.
Not expensive at all and they are available here.
This crowd also make scopes.
In the end you need to try before you buy.
Best of luck with it.

If your talking storage long term .
Im with Len.
Short term its kero as i use kero when i sharpen them to keep the diamonds clean.
Also use a mix of sewing machine oil and kero on the stones or spit.
Depending on what stone it is.
I use the covers off band saw blades after sharpening them with tape around it
to keep the edge safe from fingers as i store all mine in a cheap ally case from bunnings..
Machine oil, thin grease, diesel, and a mix of diesel with kero, all work well.
I would have thought that the pink girly knife you had would have fallen apart by now.
Or been lost on purpose
Im talking storage, not just putting it away.
Each to their own on this one, again we all do it differently.
None of my carbon steel blades have ever rusted if they are wiped clean after use.
But as mentioned blood will pit them if you dont clean them.
have fun.

Hmmm... Something you may not have considered, cheap Gen1 NV is actually really good for spotting hot coals at night, even when they are hidden. Cheap Gen1 NV isn't much good for a lot of things, but spotting fires and aurora's are two things they are very good for. And you don't always need line of sight.
I've spotted a buried fire before with Gen1... A small vent through a tiny crack in the sand, but it was like a beacon to the Gen1 scope. Would have been too small with thermal except up close and was invisible to my eye until I almost put my eye right up to it... but it was like there was a bright light under there to the Gen1.
The Gen2 also saw it, but it amplified the surrounding area so much that the effect was lost. But to Gen1, it was like a 100w light bulb in the dead of night.

David
Um just hit on an idea David.

I run a GME as a base station in the van with a magnetic base antenna while in camp.
Normal stuff for on the road.
And i have 2 x 5 watt hand helds. Not GMEs, mine out range the GME.
Im not about to either hand them in or replace them.
After all the idea is all about contact between a couple of people and base.
As long as they work im happy.

Thermal will show you where something is, but will not show you what it is and long grass can still obscure it.
Even the professional thermal hunters in the US often use thermal to locate, then switch to intensifier to identify, though some will then shoot with thermal once they confirm their target.
Unfortunately, thermal is pretty expensive so it's not widely used.
As for me? I'd love to add a thermal to my kit, but it's a little too expensive at the moment, so until I get a big chunk of spare budget or one comes along at the right price, I will have to do without.
However if I could only have one? I'd go intensifier.
Regards
David
+1
David and myself have talked alot about thermal.
But the pitchers we get are hard to beat from the gear we have.
I think what has not been said it that when we spot game through our gear the eyes light up to a glow.
They glow that bright they affect the shape of the game.
If you look through old threads you will see what i mean, and that was using a sh!tty camera.
Side on front on it does not matter, they stand out big time nothing can hide that has eyes.
Ill stick to what i have, even tho i could afford a thermal if i was silly enough to want one.
Much happier to spend the 30K on machinery to advance our projects to where we want them to be.
We even looked at breaking down cheap thermal cameras just to see what we could produce from them.
The end result of that was that it just wasn't worth it for a possible result.
But by all means keep throwing in ideas, it can only help us.
Cheers

There are a couple of things i have that i see isnt mentioned. Or i missed.
Space blanket and space bag i carry both.
I dont carry much but what i do carry does many things.
Para cord is just one of them. Break it down into many things.
A recent addition is a Styptic pencil.
Look it up and it will explain its self. Weight = 5 gram tube. Does many things.
I dont cart a shovel because the space blanket gives me clean water if i need it.
Bush craft = Where there are green leaves there is water for the taking.
As for cleaning water my fire does that if need be. Charcoal and heat.
I dont hunt in deserts.
It all boils down to where you hunt, how long you will be hunting, and what sort of country it is and the climate.
Example = A space blanket can gather water keep you warm and provide shelter as well as reflect sunlight upwards. As in distress signal.
Can also be a bucket or a flotation device, and many other things.
Total weight of a space blanket? no idea its in grams.
Get my drift mate?
Your doing the right thing ask questions these answers will not only help you they may help or save others.
We are all guilty of carting far to much crap and we do it just in case.
Not always a bad thing you never know when you might need it.
But as you get older not always wiser you learn that you dont need it all because its bloody heavy and never gets used.
Just one thing, always carry a film container with cotton wool soaked in kero and diesel packed in tight.
That small container is you last resort to getting a fire going when all else fails.
On top of that i carry 4 hexi tabs. Just in case and a flint. Yes i have storm proof matches army issue but i trust the flint.
Cold will kill you slowly painlessly but it will kill you.
I also have 6 duva lackies, they are what you can use on a tarp of space blanket to tie it off to tree when no holes or eyelets exist. Weight maybe 5 grams.
But you can do the same thing with a round stone and para cord, but a duva lackie locks in and cant move. Stones can cut through and do move. Use round stones no edges.
Some of my ways are a bit different to others because i grew up with the Brothers they taught me some of the skills.
keep asking questions many will gain from it.
All the best.

Carson binos are the go.
Check mine out next time your going past.
Evey one that has had a look through them got a pair.
They also make scopes.
-
Mate the bar slides through the knuckle, so you get to use the width and the length of the pad.
No flat spots, unlike what you get with a stone and by hand doing a figure 8.
Its a good thing but im still after other ideas to refine this.
Cheers.
-
whats that rectanglular coloured thing? stone?
Thats the 4 sided diamond block, i use to use cards they were about 4mm thick x 50mm wide.
The block keeps fingers well away from the edge.
Its a simple set up.
Not sure its right yet, but it works.
-
I may have got the pics to work.
This is the second unit, im still trying for a fast simple and portable thing to pack when i head off.
You will get the general idea from the pics.
Its only a bit of hard wood and half a removable hinge, along wit a bit of threaded bar.
Not much to it, but i would like to refine it even further.
Cheers

I use to hollow grind my field knifes, then sharpen them.
I leave about 5mm of un ground steel and thats the bit i sharpen.
The reason i hollow ground them was due to their thickness of blade.
Not any more, i find that 15deg keeps a great edge for breaking down beef sheep and pigs.
This is on butchering knifes.
However 20 deg in the field last longer on rough fur and bone with a field knife.
Each to their own i guess.
What im after is ideas so those that dont have much luck with an edge get some idea of how the rest of us do it.
Something that we can take with us and use in camp.
I have carted a 75mm diamond steel with me for years and to date not used it in the field.
But its there if i have a bad day

LOL ok you guys that just keep going till you can shave your arm.
I use a bit of spit to help.
Now be honest, how many of you roll the edge over and break it off?
Now i say that because its a problem of mine, and you can see the edge flopping about.
And there lies the reason why i sharpen to 15 deg.
You dont roll the edge over.
I can still shave with it in fact i can strip off 1mm strips of paper from an A4, with no fury bits on the cut. They will cut through under their own weight.
Now who rolls the edge over, i do if i dont control the angle.
Nice bit of gear Cam but a bit iffy mate.
I think mine cost me 20 bucks lol.
And the diamonds come with a free carbide sharpener.
Which i used for the first time in my life on a brand new knife.
The bloody thing works it can even strip off paper.
Im not into powered sharpeners. Im after the home brew stuff.
Keep it coming boys.
