I can't bring myself to trust electronic compasses... I think they rely on you walking for a bit before they really know which way is which - but that might be total crap. I haven't read enough to know for sure because I don't trust them
Old fashioned is the way there I reckon

Welcome back, stranger!
i thought the iridium network was going to get splashed (literally) years ago? Someone must have thrown some cash at it and saved them?
i used to visit a website that told you when and where to look for "iridium flares" which was when the sun was reflected off the solar panels of the iridium satellites into your location. Might have to refind it.

Fussy beat me to it so a +1 for soaking your clothes in pyrethrum (or similar).
I walked the Kokoda Track with soaked clothes (shorts and tshirt) and got left alone.
That way it lets you chose your gear without having to worry too much about mozzies.

Be interested to hear how it goes, Paul. Photos would be ace too

Get as much good advice as you can then sort through it and decide what you think will work for you and what won't.
For your trips, start out "adventurous" but safe and work up from there. That'll give you time to get used to the gear and also understand your own limits and preferences.
Decide if you want a fun time or a challenging time or a hard time or a combination of all and design your trips around that. Make sure that "fun" makes a big part of it
Don't overthink it!
And finally, tell us your stories when you get home!!

How do you fibd the tension free glassing on the s4?
The tension on a standard harness seems to help with keening the binos steady.I had a cheaper version before the S4 and the tension was so high that keeping the glasses at eye level was a real fight so fatigue/shaking became an issue after a minute or so. Maybe I have a weird shaped head? (Shuddup all of you).
Dont have the same problem with the S4. I can't remember if you can adjust it to be tighter 'cause I've never been tempted. I'd assume there would be a way - just make some straps shorter.

I think Altonahunter put me onto them. Glad I took the plunge

S4 Lockdown X
https://www.abbeyarchery.com.au/p/S4SG00314/S4+Gear+LockDown+X+Optics+Deployment+System,+camo.html
Bloody great!! I can (and usually do) wear it with a backpack as well.

Maybe use a central locking kit from a car to drive locking bolts? Dunno what happens if the power goes out But having a remote control to open your safe door would be cool! You could use a second button to start the motor under the lazy susan!!
Other than that, butchering a std safe door is the only other thing I can think of.

Optic beat me to it on both.
Don't slit it from end-to-end. A slit cantered that goes maybe 80% to each side is what you want. If you slit it all the way it won't close properly and will drip.

Hahahaha! Thanks HJ!!

The site has an age filter.
It knows that old people always repeat themselves so it's saving you the effort

You should be ashamed of that workbench!
Everything else looks pretty cool though

I'm sure you'll sort it out soon enough

That sewing machine looks bulletproof!
Using it for canvas I'd guess?

I've got the Arias too - they work well but pricey

+1 on the solarforce gear.
I haven't compared their stuff with Olight though.
One thing to remember is that LED technology is moving so quickly that whatever you buy today, is probably going to be superseded in a month! So don't overthink your purchase because there are amazing torches available - but definitely do some research.
Questions to ask yourself:
- what range do I need/want?
- do I want spot or spread or both?
- rechargeable batteries or throw always (I'd recommend 18650 rechargeables)
- what colour(s) - white, red, green?
- is a modular design important to you (i.e., can you swap out heads, switches, bodies and/or other features)?
- what size torch?
- dedicated shooting torch or multi-use?
- and, of course, budget!!
On batteries, you need to budget these in if you go rechargeable as you'll need a few and you'll also need a recharger. I'd again recommend the 18650s but buy them from a reputable source because there are rip offs out there claiming massive outputs to suck people in...
