at a guess it looks like an industrial grade of stainless maybe 314, if so no go, if you've used some high carbon or spring steel you can do it yourself, if you've used high grade stainless such as 440c you will have to send it away unless you have a furnace. if you live in qld my brother is a knifemaker and has such a furnace and a forge. cheers kicka

Tell you what does make a good blade and that is an old flat bast@rd metal file, the carbon steel is so hard to grind into shape and put an edge on, once there its a good one, use old Aussie or British made files, new ones from China not so good quailty steel

The 303 Stainless Steel would not be heat treatable.

In the readily purchased stainless steels in Australia you would need to use 440C and ATS34, other steels that you could find readily in Australia are D2 or O-1. Wiltshire files are supposed to be made of 1095 and can be heat treated to make knives.

There are few places where you can get the steels one is:

Knives Australia

Many knifemakers import from the USA.

I would suggest that with the 440C, ATS34 and D2 you get the heat treatment by

Hills Heat Treatment in Victoria it would only cost you about $10 + postage. The do a very good job.

There is an Australia Site that has some knife liking people:

Laventrix
