Hey ppl. I've been on this forum for a while but have been inactive for some time while travelling and working. Originally joined when I was WA and now we are settled on the Gold Coast QLD. Transferred my rifles over from WA into my QLD licence which are .22 LR Brno CZ, Beretta/Boito 12G U/O, Mossberg 12G Rifled S/G Bolt action. My fav would have to be my mossberg, shooting 300g hornady sabots. New state means absolutely no farm contacts over here, so I'm keen to get to know where everything is at and start getting back into hunting. IN WA I primarily went for rabbits, foxes, camels, donkey, goats and wild dogs. Where I hunted in WA was light on Pigs and Deer so will be keen as mustard to score my first in QLD.

Thanks gibs, confirmed what I was thinking. I was thinking that the grey area was the definition of the immovable structure.

I have a farmer who has asked me to sort out a safe in one of the houses on their farm (WA). Its an old wooden farmhouse and the cops have said that installing a safe in there wouldn't comply because it has to be anchored to brick or cement on three faces. My question is, if we cut a section of the floor out and laid a small concrete pad with cinder block walls on 2 connecting sides and installed the safe that way, would it be compliant? Or does it have to attached to a structural wall? Also, the place has a chimney stack, if the first option isn't going to work, could we make one face of the safe bolt to one of the sides of the fireplace and cinder block the other side using a concrete slab as described in the first option?

Hey Hosstifer, The devil is in the detail when putting in your application. As we are the people who use these guns, we understand the need for two high powered rifles in different calibres, especially when it comes to camels, .308 is minimum calibre imho. But the licensing department just see two high powered rifles and says "too many". I've found the more I explained the reason behind the additional guns required, the easier the application process was. I'm not too sure on the recourse after the application has been submitted, maybe one of the more experienced members on here from WA can help you there. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

I've only ever had Garmin, so can't really comment on the other brands. The eTrex from garmin is quite good and we have used it on hunts before. You can track where you have been but I think this is a fairly standard feature of all GPS's. Being able to quickly mark locations and tag them is good as well. I wouldn't bother with the iphone unless as a backup. The battery life is too short compared to the handheld GPS's. I have seen solar chargers for the iphone that can sit on top of your backpack and charge the iphone while you walk, but I have never used them. I doubt they would work too well when hunting because you are in and out of cover all the time. You can buy OzTopo contours and tracks for the garmin or you can download Shonky maps for free. In some cases, shonky maps had more track info than oztopo for where I was going. There is also an app on the iPhone that can download the satellite images for the area you are going and allows for use offline (ie no 3g access). It also has breadcrumbs feature. I should also add that don't ever rely on the GPS, always take a topographical map of the area and a compass.

Went out recently and one of the guys had the tramontina roll off ebay. Worked really well and then coupled with a good diamond oval steel makes sharpening a breeze and you can work faster. I like the idea of the sofgrip Dexter's tho. There's a guy in NT who supplies them on ebay.

I'm in Kallaroo, right near Ocean Reef and I've been heading out to some close properties alot more lately as well. Always good to have another set of eyes in the Navara or a tag along myself. Happy hunting.

I'm not 100% sure but I heard that HID only throws out one "spectrum" of light which is visible to us, but to animals it might not dazzle them as much becuase they don't detect that spectrum as well as we would. Where as traditional incandescent light throws out a large range of the spectrum because the filament, the air around the filament all give off varying spectrums. This is another reason the HID's are more energy efficient than incandescent because they are only spraying out one band of the spectrum. Would be interesting to hear from an expert on this.

Thanks Beno. I think its a great forum so far. Been reading up on heaps of info and its been great. Apart from Club Shoots and the odd trip with my family, I don't get to talk much about guns/hunting with other people due to the stigma attached to hunters. I spose I just get sick of the arguments. So its a nice change to be able to speak freely and enjoy some good debate and learn from experienced people. And Len ... Tonto is great but we lost Silver to Mondo Meats a couple of weeks ago. Not complaining, I'm just happy he went there versus the glue factory. Cheers guys.
