  1. Hey, a pair of tabbys, you've got yourself a pair of slippers. You don't want odd ones...that would look silly. Welcome aboard. Grant
  2. I don't hunt with a bow but I imagine that you need to get to your area before you have your equipment at the ready. I'm pretty sure it's not the same as walking them up with a rifle. I've seen a bowhunter at work. Those blokes creep like stick insects once they are in a hot area. I'm talking about deer, not rabbits. Grant
  3. Duncs just test your pack and other stuff under a black light. If it reflects like your hair used to at the discos then it probably needs a wash but stopping UV reflection can be a major problem no matter what the wash people say. Just don't wash your clothes with that powder with all the whitening additives. Lectric is OK on clothes that already don't have UV brighteners soaked in. If they have then I reckon you have it forever to some degree. Take a look back at the pictures of the old deer hunters, collar and tie with some of them, they still plugged 'em and there wasn't that many around in those days. Selling camo clothing is easy, people think it's the must have....hell what am I saying? Grant.
  4. Hunt into the wind, go slow and be quiet, see them before they see you. Why would you wash your hunting gear, except your pants after you've been honked at 10 metres. Grant.
  5. I'm not a knifemaker but I admire those who have the skills to do this work. I'm more of a knife hoarder, I can't bear to throw a knife away but this one should have gone into the big bin. It's an old Taiwan made kitchen knife which was really hard to keep an edge on, was badly stained and had some pitting. As I said I just couldn't chuck it without some attempt at reconditioning, so here it is. The wooden handle was stained and had residual dirt or grease on it so I rubbed it down back to some proper colour. Secured the blade in a vice and took to it with a chainsaw file to attempt to make a serrated carving blade. Polished the blade and gave the wood the good old Tru Oil treatment. The filing of course was without any guide and the variations can easily be seen. As I got to half way I discovered what I had done by accident. I was creating a right handers carving knife, so from halfway, filing towards the handle I put a little angle on the serration to give it a type of chainsaw action on the forward stroke. It's now a razor sharp 350mm carver. Not a beautiful work of art, but I saved this blade from the bin and I'll test it on the roasts at the Gatta. Grant.
  6. Yep it is a good gadget, takes excellent pictures. I might go for the hand held radios though, I need a couple more. Grant.
  7. I have a new favorite knife, not new but a reconditioning if you will. Before: After: Everything is made better. Quality, thicker to fill a palm. Beefwood. Just great. Courtesy of The Lord of Glencoe Grant.
  8. I think it's not just the battery quality Optic, some cameras are hard on batteries, others not. I can only tell you about a Wildview I have which has an actual flash and if I got 50 pictures half of them with a flash, the batteries would be dead. I don't bother with that one anymore. The Aldi/Ltl Acorns seem to be very good with battery usage. Use 8 x AAA and get 6 months standby. 4 X AAA for 3 months. Got 534 pictures a few months ago and then put the thing straight back out with the same batteries. I use the Aldi Activ Energy Alkaline. There's probably better quality batteries but until these fail me I'll stick with them. Cheap too in the 50 pack. Grant.
  9. Brett I have never had an issue with the rain on mine but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have a cover. I think the trigger is one second, so if you are close to the camera there is a chance that you will slip by. The side sensors wake the camera up, then, when a moving target gets to the lens area that's when it triggers. If the sensor wakes the camera up from the side and the target doesn't enter the aimed area it won't take a pic....I think. The 30 seconds apart setting allows for either different animals or the same animal in a different position, but if the one animal just moves through the area you end up with two blanks. I prefer about 5 seconds. Try setting up outside simulating the bush setting minimum 3 metres from your target. The new model that you and I just got has a couple of better features than the old one but I haven't done proper setup yet. Grant.
  10. I see the bulge now but I prefer the magic explanation. Thanks. Grant
  11. I got one, it's a bit different from the last one Aldi had. This one has sound as well and the whole 8 batteries are in the same compartment. The design is better. I'm still intrigued as to how the power gets from the battery pack to the camera, I can only see the metal hinge pin. Can you tell me how it works Shawn? Grant.
  12. I'll be away hunting but, talked Mrs SHV into being first in line at the door. Grant.
  13. Here's mine. Made by Wally Bidgood when he lived in Mornington. I think he's in Castlemaine now. I have sharper knives but they don't hold the edge like this one does. I remember when I was talking to him about it he mentioned something about using Swedish steel that he imported. I have had it for quite a while now. Also another use for para cord. As well as being a handy lanyard the colour helped me find it once when I left it on the ground. Grant.
  14. Here am I sandpapering a bit of wood and you are making those beauties!! Well done Richard.
  15. Optic you might try some research on "oiled leather". From memory there was some system of oiling with stuff like Dubbin while the leather was damp, the idea was preservation and conditioned leather for easier working I think. Grant.
  16. Geoff, regarding the gift you mentioned in post 6, how long should I let it go before I ask the Post Office to look for my parcel? Grant.
  17. I reckon that would be too hard to control, but the curve design is for one purpose I have a small skinner with big curve blade which gives me very good control. The cut out which is probably be designed for a forefinger using a full grip makes the thing too small for my hand but if I use it for my thumb, the blade becomes an extension of my finger. Very good close quarter control in hard to get at places. Grant.
