  1. thanks ep, thats really helpful! im keen not to sink $$ on an unsuitable kit i just bought a window mount and remote handle yesterday for my spottie (there goes $220) which i tried out last night. 30s into the first paddock and i was driving, spotting and shooting at a fox all by myself! love it. next project will be to get the hid kit you suggest.
  2. hahah im struggling to come to terms with the $130 price tag (i had seen those kits by 95soarer for the handheld but was sure you had bought something cheaper for yours epitome. looks like the $130 kit is the most suitable option) when the sl170 itself cost me $130. wish id bought a 240. might go and buy a mount for it first so i can go out shooting by myself
  3. accutracking is the name of that service. gps-tracker app does the same thing for free, but without the pazazz or service support.
  4. yeah the battery gets slaughtered when actively using gps. phone gets real warm too (i have a htc desire as well)
  5. seeing as though its been bumped... the question has been asked a number of times; which kit?
  6. great, ill order some. yeah thats fairly typical of DX. so long as it comes correct and in working order the first time then thats ok. dealing with missing items and faulty items is a nightmare. expect added delays when DX shuts down for chinese new year too
  7. so ive got an android phone (yes im geeky and yes i consider myself non-conformist, hence refusing anything apple branded) and whilst searching the market for some gps software i came across and tried a gps-tracker app. this app runs on the phone, takes gps data from satellite(s) and then sends it over the phone network to a website as a data broadcast where you can view the location, etc, by logging in to a user account created before starting. the idea being that the mrs, who is somewhat paranoid, can check up on where i am when out shooting. she can see that im not stuck somewhere but am still driving around enjoying myself. only trouble is, it wont work without phone reception which as we all know, is never much chop out where the ferals live. the other problem is, transmitting data uses up your mobile phone plan's data allowance. i dont know how much, but apparently it can be quite a bit. settings allow you to adjust how often the phone transmits signal from default of every 5s to whatever frequency you like. anyone used such an app or got any better ideas?
  8. moph: well done and thanks go to you for sharing all that info you collated. i was coming here to ask if anyone had a recommendation for 18650s and a charger from dx and you have obliged in advance! good onya! im getting a little tired of looking for cr123s for my fenix tk11, and ill be damned if i pay $34 for a pair of duracells at bunnings. did find a single sanyo (made in japan, best primary imo) for $7.50 on sale for $6 at ranger outdoors/getaway outdoors today. at that price id buy half a dozen, so when they come in to stock they reckon theyll call me. now, my only query concerns those batteries fitting into that charger. reading some of the comments on that charger, one user has reported: presumably you didnt have this trouble?
  9. im not a fan of mine.. i bought it for the same reasons as you but its pretty rubbish in the car.. i have just fitted a 90cm uniden whip and run the cable inside the cab to connect to the handheld and that really makes a difference. im still not convinced its as good as a built in 5w so i feel a bit ripped off... so ive resigned myself to getting a real 2way for the car eventually.
  10. likewise. id have about 20 pairs i reckon. you may have caught a story recently in the business news (if you get into that sort of thing) regarding 'pacific brands' sudden return to profit? anyhow, by slashing jobs and outsourcing labour to china they are again back in the black. so now many of our fav brands like holeproof and bonds are made in china.. its not the end of the world, its just economics. if they didnt move offshore the brand would no longer exist. at least now you still have the option of their product and you can choose not to purchase if you like http://www.businessspectator.com.au/bs.nsf/Article/Pacific-Brands-recovers-to-profit-8MVQG?opendocument&src=rss
  11. the trouble with spotlights that have ciggy plugs is that invariably, the ciggy lighter in the car wont work... the fuse will be blown or the socket will be stuffed. i bought my spottie with alligator clips to avoid any possibility of ciggy not working..
  12. so which kit/globe does not need an adaptor? i really need to upgrade my 170, def need more light out of it..
  13. if you really wanted to be helpful, you would post about this in the 'Give a mate a hand' forum what does one of those bad boys set you back? it sounds ideal.
  14. i forgot about red filters... i really need to get one for my lightforce 170 i think.. saturday night it was absolutely freezing out, spotted only 2 foxes. one that quickly ran and another that was in the middle of a fallow paddock that couldnt outrun me. i quite often have this trouble with foxes, so perhaps a red filter would be a good idea, cheaper than nv at least.
  15. i was going to suggest the same, i use a set of QB1. i have peltor earmuffs and the QB1's that i use for work but i prefer the peltor muffs at work because they dont enter the ear canal (obviously). the QB1's are more practical for tramping around the bush though, so the short period of discomfort when taking a shot is outweighed by not lugging a big pair of muffs around the gob
  16. holy crap! you can buy the cases for not much more than that: http://www.nvt.com.au/p/1045202/vanguard-alluminium-double-rifle-guncase.html
  17. this looks alright: http://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/handheld-dakota-10-gps/
  18. ive got the top of the line uniden handheld 5w and its rubbish. cost a fortune and i wouldve been better off buying a decent car unit.
  19. link please... the cheapest ive found cr123a is like $10 each...
  20. haha! lots of shots of the dog licking its nether regions no doubt
  21. i like the idea of a removable mount for the roof that requires no penetration - no leaks, no bumping ya head on it and the ability to have the window up in winter is perfect!
  22. i note that the two options are about the same price now (option one selling for $130+post and option two for $70+post+$60+post) so the benefit of option two is two ballasts and globes with easily sourced replacements. no idea what sort of globe the option1 is using.. <edit> so the cost of the upgrade is at least as expensive as the initial cost of the spotlight itself!
